Bedroom design

Unlike other rooms in a house, a bedroom design is an incredibly personal thing and the space should be tailored to suit your personal tastes.

Unfortunately though, because many people don’t understand the basic concepts of bedroom design, despite their best efforts, the finished room never looks or feels how they hoped it would.

From picking the right colour for the walls or the little touches like picking the right mattresses (try Bedstar), it’s easy to make mistakes.

Your bedroom is a place that should be tranquil, somewhere to relax and unwind. It should be a very personal space for you/you and your partner. Below I will guide you though designing your new bedroom.

Colour

Firstly you should choose what colour you are going to use in your room. As a general rule people use more calming aquatic colours in the bedroom that promote relaxation and tranquillity. However be wary if you go for cooler shades of blue your room can become too cold and unwelcoming.

Warmer, earthier tones are more calming such as browns and deeper shades of purple. Or go for something brighter if you want a more vibrant room, yellows and pinks that will bounce light around the room in the morning sun.

Layout

Where to put the bed is the main issue when planning the layout of your bedroom. Some of you may be familiar with Feng Shui this is Chinese study that looks at people’s relationship to their surroundings. In Feng Shui it is believed that your bed should be easy to approach from both sides have two bedside tables at each side and keep the bed away from the direct line of the door by following these principals it is believed that your room should be a fun and pleasurable room to be in.

After you have decided where the bed will go you need to think about where to put your wardrobe, chest of drawers etc remember you need to leave adequate space to be able to open the doors to the wardrobe and open the draws.

If you have a larger room why not have a chair or a sofa somewhere you can relax and read.

Lighting

Bedroom lighting can often be forgotten about why not fit a dimmer switch so you can create an atmosphere. Add lamps to your bedside tables to not only add symmetry of the room but to create different pools of light. Not forgetting how handy lamps can be when your reading in bed and don’t want to get up to turn the light out.

Make the most of your space

If you have a small room be careful with the use of pattern in your room be it in the curtains or wallpaper large patterns can be over powering and make the room look smaller. Instead have a statement wall and paint the other walls.

Mirrors and mirrored wardrobes will emphasise the space of the room bouncing the light and colour around the room.

Bedding

Bedding is like the icing on the cake. Play around with different textures and layers. Your bedding can add colour and warmth to your room and a feeling of luxury.

Accessorise

It’s all about the accessories choose lamps, candles and throws to tie the look together don’t go to matchy, matchy use them to make a statement. Surround yourself with pictures make it your space!
